WENGEN - MURREN
Switzerland
THE RESORT
WENGEN
Wengen lies on a sunny plateau at the foot of the Jungfrau, 400 metres above the Lauterbrunnen valley at an altitude of 1274 m. The tradition-imbued, car-free holiday resort offers a family-friendly ski area around the Männlichen and the Kleine Scheidegg.
it is remarkably small and one of the most quaint destinations in the Alps. The focus of the resort is on a short main street lined by shops and several large Victorian-style hotels.
The views from the ski area are a highlight, with the iconic Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains making a magnificent backdrop. For more far-reaching views, the railway continues above the ski area, through a tunnel in the Eiger to Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454m
MURREN
Mürren is a car-free village and the third part of this ski area.
It is small and quaint so if you're looking to relax and enjoy amazing scenery and access some good skiing - then Murren works for you. It's biggest claim to fame is for being home to the Piz Gloria, the mountaintop revolving restaurant featured in one of the Bond 007 movies.
Schilthorn-Piz Gloria
Enjoy the 360° breathtaking view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau (UNESCO world heritage site) and more than 200 other mountain peaks in the world’s first revolving mountain restaurant Piz Gloria. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the Mont Blanc massif in France and Germany’s Black Forest. Also for non-skiers is the interactive Bond World 007.
THE SKIING
WENGEN
Wengen is the ideal starting point for the family-friendly ski region of Kleine Scheidegg-Männlichen with 110 km of predominantly easy to medium-difficulty pistes, and the renowned World Cup piste on the Lauberhorn as its crowning glory. The neighbouring ski areas of the Jungfrau region, Grindelwald-First and Mürren-Schilthorn are also readily accessible.
The local ski area has 103km of pistes. In total the Jungfrau lift pass covers 210km of pistes and is served by 40 lifts and covers the separate ski areas of Mürren (linked by cog railway and then cable car) and Grindelwald First (reached via Grindelwald village, where there’s a bus). The ski area suits intermediates best but the slopes in Mürren offer some challenges.
MURREN
Mürren is the third valley of th Jungfrau ski area. Lower down on the mountain, the slopes are intermediate but when you venture higher up - you will encounter some of the ski area's challenging runs including The Inferno which is a 15km run that has it all: wide, pristine pistes and paths cut into steep mountains with huge towering rock faces that go on forever.
The winter sports region of Mürren-Schilthorn has 51 km of prepared ski and snowboard pistes, toboggan runs and a network of winter walking trails. Beyond the Lauterbrunnen valley, a further 30 or so cableways and lifts, and 160 km of pistes in the other ski areas of the Jungfrau region can also be used.
At the end of the day, venture into the Tachi Bar at the Hotel Eiger for some fun apres ski.
